My Therapeutic Approach

My approach is compassionate and holistic, with a focus on strengths, contextual understanding (looking at the big picture), collaboration, and normalizing human experiences.

I draw from CBT, ACT, DBT, and mindfulness-based theories, meaning we will likely spend some time:

  • understanding how your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours are connected;

  • learning how to prevent your thoughts and feelings from controlling you—moving you from the passenger's seat back into the driver's seat;

  • identifying and focusing on what matters most to you;

  • developing self-awareness and new perspectives;

  • learning skills for managing intense emotions, handling stress and distress, and building better relationships; and

  • finding a balance between accepting yourself and working to change unhealthy habits.

By integrating these approaches, we’ll work together to improve your mental health, build emotional resilience, and help you create a more balanced and fulfilling life.

About Counselling Therapy

Counselling therapy is a professional relationship that involves a Registered Counselling Therapist (me) and a client (you) working together to explore and address emotional, psychological, and behavioural challenges. We work together to develop a plan aimed at creating meaningful, positive changes in the way you think, feel, act, and socially function. We identify what is challenging you, and identify actionable steps toward positive change.

It is common to seek help if you are experiencing thoughts, feelings, moods, and behaviour that are negatively affecting your day-to-day life, your relationships, and your ability to find satisfaction or enjoyment in your life.

Registered Counselling Therapists (RCT/RCT-C) are licensed professionals regulated by the Nova Scotia College of Counselling Therapists, and are responsible for upholding high professional standards, engaging in continuous professional development, and adhering to a strict code of ethics.

Cognitive behavioural therapy, CBT

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

A practical and goal-oriented approach that helps you understand the connection between your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. In CBT, you learn to identify negative thinking patterns and replace them with healthier, more positive ones. This therapy is especially effective for managing anxiety, depression, and stress by giving you the tools to handle challenges more constructively.

Acceptance and comittment therapy, ACT

Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Focuses on helping you accept difficult thoughts and feelings instead of fighting against them. ACT encourages you to stay present in the moment and take meaningful action that aligns with your values, even when facing tough emotions. The goal is to help you lead a more fulfilling life by building psychological flexibility and developing a healthier relationship with your thoughts and emotions.

Dialectical behavioural therapy, DBT

Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT)

Combines mindfulness and behavioral techniques to help you regulate intense emotions, improve relationships, and reduce self-destructive behaviors. DBT teaches you skills in four main areas: mindfulness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness. It's particularly useful for individuals who experience overwhelming emotions or struggle with relationships.
